Five Western Mass. teens arrested after stolen car crashes with two others on I-91
Five Western Massachusetts teens were arrested Saturday after a car chase between police and a stolen car ended with the stolen car crashing with two others on I-91 in West Springfield, Holyoke police announced Monday. The car chase began after a Holyoke police sergeant noticed a car that had been reported stolen driving around the city with five people inside, Holyoke police said in a press release. The sergeant tried to pull over the stolen car as it went into the Holyoke Mall parking lot, but the driver accelerated and crashed through two wooden barriers around a construction zone. The stolen car continued onto I-91 south and tried to get off at an exit, but it collided with another vehicle, which led to a third vehicle being struck, police said. All five people in the stolen car ran into the woods following the crash. The sergeant checked on the people in the other two vehicles and then began searching for the suspects, police said. West Springfield police and Massachusetts State Police troopers and the State Police Air Wing responded to the scene to aid in the search. West Springfield police located all five of the suspects: an 18-year-old Chicopee man, a male 17-year-old from Holyoke, a 15-year-old Springfield girl, a 14-year-old Pittsfield girl and a 24-year-old Springfield woman, police said. They arrested the 17-year-old, 15-year-old and 14-year-old, who declined a medical evaluation, and the 18-year-old and 24-year-old were taken to Baystate Medical Center with injuries but are being charged with receiving a stolen vehicle. The investigation into the incident indicated that the 17-year-old was driving the stolen car during the car chase, police said. Holyoke police did not identify any of the suspects. Community mourns Michigan father of two killed in crash following Roseville police chase
A man is dead after a car crash on Saturday following a police chase in Roseville, Michigan. "It just hit me like a ton of bricks, man. Took the breath out of me," said Tom Brady, owner of Jim Brady's Royal Oak. Grappling over his employee's death, Brady says Alex Habib, a server at his restaurant, was the epitome of a well-rounded guy. "When he was in the building, everybody was just a little bit happier, everyone was a little bit more at ease," Brady said. Habib is described as compassionate, funny, and devoted to anything he puts his mind to. "If I ever had a daughter, Alex would be who I would hope my daughter would be able to meet and marry because you Google family man, great husband, great father, it's got his picture," said Brady. The husband and father of two was tragically killed when a chase that started in Roseville and ended in Warren near the area of 11 Mile Road and Van Dyke Avenue, according to police. According to the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office, the suspect was identified as a 16-year-old from Detroit. It will be determined whether the teen will be tried as an adult. "Alex is out working Uber as another side job to earn more money for his family. Just nonstop, this guy's commitment to his wife and kids, and wrong place, wrong time, got t-boned and I think he died instantly," Brady said. Brady says Habib's family learned police were chasing a suspect in a stolen car. "Those are so dangerous, and I think that for the theft of a car, I personally feel that should never be allowed to happen again. I think that it should be against the law," said Brady. "We lost a really, really good guy. The world got a little less funny, got a little less caring…when we lost Alex," Brady said. There has been a huge outpouring of support for Habib's family online if the community wants to get involved. CBS News Detroit reached out to Roseville police multiple times for comment on this crash and is waiting for a response. Macomb County Pete Lucido issued a statement on Monday, saying, "This was a completely preventable tragedy. An innocent person is dead because someone allegedly chose to flee from law enforcement, endangering everyone around them. Our thoughts are with the victim's family, and we remain committed to seeking justice." Lucido says he wants lawmakers to propose bills that address drivers who flee from police. "This dangerous trend puts lives at risk and undermines the rule of law. By working together across party lines, we can ensure law enforcement has the tools they need to protect our roads and our communities," Lucido said. "Every time a driver chooses to flee, they put lives at risk. We need statutory enhancement of consequences including mandatory prison time. The people of the state of Michigan deserve to be protected." The 16-year-old's next court hearing is July 18.

Car thief busted thanks to his trip to McDonald's
A prolific car thief who led police on wild chases was finally snared after being exposed by his McDonald's order. Callum Roberts nicked two cars within two weeks of each other from locations across Shrewsbury, a country town in western England, in February this year. But in a bizarre twist, the 20-year-old's love for fast-food eventually led to his arrest. He snatched the first vehicle, a silver BMW, from a car park on February 15 at 10pm. When the stolen car flagged up on police systems later that evening, West Mercia officers followed. Roberts led the force on a high speed chase as he barrelled through 48km/h zones at 96km/h. He narrowly avoided smashing into another vehicle before evading the force. The BMW was subsequently found abandoned in a remote area. But, Roberts must have felt a little peckish after stealing the car, as officers found a McDonald's bag left behind. It contained a receipt showing he'd been to the branch in Meole Brace, shortly after committing his crime. CCTV footage from the restaurant revealed Roberts as the driver. Just two weeks later, the keys to a Citroen C3 were taken from a property. And, the next night Roberts came back for the car itself. Three days later, officers spotted the vehicle, and engaged in another pursuit when Roberts failed to stop. On this occasion, the thief travelled at around 96km/h in a 32km/h zone, before recklessly driving down a highway in the wrong direction. Here, Roberts started speeding in excess of 160km/h, and nearly crashed into a truck. He eventually stopped in an off shoulder on the highway and tried to flee on foot, but officers quickly detained him. Perhaps it was the second McDonald's that slowed him down, as investigations uncovered Roberts had scoffed a meal from the chain yet again. This time, he had used bank cards found within the Citroen. Roberts pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, aggravated vehicle taking, fraud by false representation and two counts of driving while disqualified in May 2025 at Shrewsbury Crown Court. A judge sentenced the defendant to three years in jail. He will also be subject to a four-year and two-month driving ban when he is released. Detective Constable Tom Clough, said: 'I hope yesterday's sentence serves as a warning that we will work tirelessly to ensure those who cause distress to the public by taking what does not belong to them, as well as putting lives at risk by their actions, are put before the courts. 'Not only was he driving stolen vehicles, Roberts was aware that he was driving while disqualified and his willingness to engage in such risk taking to evade capture on two separate occasions is something that caused officers great concern. 'This was a team effort and if it wasn't for the commitment of my team as well as our roads policing officers, we couldn't have achieved such a good result in such a short space of time. 'I am pleased with the sentence at court, which I hope gives the victims some sort of closure, as well as time for Roberts to reflect on how dangerous his actions were, which could have had tragic consequences given the lack of care for the safety of others and himself.'
